Since most of the stuff I play does not qualify as retro I figured a new thread was in order. I feel very rewievie today so here it goes:
DOOm3: I'm still playing the game, so I can't give u a full review yet. Many people have complained about the annoying fact that u can either have a flashlight or a gun, but I think the use of the low to zero lighting really make the game atmosphere. I find it somewhat creepy to be playing the game late at night. Revives the spirit of what I heard about he original Resident Evil games.
Black: In my opinion one of the best shooters for the ps2, the gameplay and enemies do not change much, but the game is graphicaly appealing, has good sound and excelent explosion and rag-doll physics. I never get tired of blowing up things and throwing bodies around. One of the stand out features of the game and also it's main chalange is the fact that your enemy if very heavily armoured so you can't just spray them, form most in takes between a clip to a clip and a half to kill one guy, thus you are forced to aim for headshots for quick kills. The game is not without it's faults some of the save points are extremly far apart causing many replays of the same sections. In some instances the enemy AI is very inteligent they swarm u like locusts in heavy kevlar, in other cases the AI is lacking, in several istances the enemy does not notice that you just shot one of them if you make a clean head shot.
Lego Star Wars II: most fun I've had in awhile. It's hard to get bored of blowing up lego soldiers, as well as popping off their heads. This game has many hidden gems beyond the great co-op play function that let's you drop in and out of the gaME. my favorites are the rock radios u can build to get the Jaba's Pig guards to start rockingout with their axes.

I've had Doom3 for over a year and still can't be arsed to finish it. Like you said, I found the overall darkness to be nice and atmospheric at first, but after a while it just got really annoying. I would often just have to shoot randomly all around just to try to hit something. I did find a mod that let your gun send out light like the flashlight, but then the game got too easy. I do love the fact that I can run it on Linux though.
I really really liked the first lego star wars, I'm definitely going to try the new one. I thought the first lego star wars was much better than that terrible Revenge of the Sith piece of crap abortion of a game.

I have finaly finished Doom3 My only major gripe is that the game was not totaly compatiable with my chipset so sometimes it would stuter, especialy in high graphic areas, which made some of the heavy battles hard to overcome. Unlike most after I got used to the darkness, the lack of light when a weapon was drawn was not a major issue most of the time, though in some cases the need to weight for the Imps to fire first was kindda annoying. As I already said the low visability and use of flashlight I think actually improved the game. I felt sorta unconfertable playing the game at night because of it, it even made me nervous. That's an accomplishment. I have to give some props to the designers for their depth. When looking into machines, there were even animated elements far beyond the point of your access. It was quite interesting standing in areas surrounded by giant machines watching pistons move all around you, pipes slack and tighten, and steam and liquid pass about. My other fav. was the fact that u could see yourself and zombies in mirrors, though I was never able to angle it so I could see a kill in the mirrors. I also give props for the elements of humor and nostalgia in the game. On one of the tablets u realise that the epic final battle depicted is pretty much the original Doom's cover. There was also many hidden treasures, like a video disc with instructions on demonic spell casting...apperantly u have to age your goat blood. As u might expect there was many references and recreations of battles from the previous doom games. There was even a copy of doom left playing on one of the computer terminals. I wish the chainsaw was available from the beggining of the game, especialy early on when u have a lot more zombies. There is nothing better than shredding dead flesh with it. However I would have loved it if after use it got dirty instead of staying sparkling clean. Interesting side note: why has no First person game though of having your feet visible when you look down?

Lego Starwars still rocks my world.
So does Puzzle Fighter, but I guess that's almost retro by now.

Used to play a really great puzzel type game on the PC a long time ago called the 7th guest, but my disk just quit working one day. I wish they would re-release it because it was a awesome spooky game. It had a squeal called the 11th hour but it wasn't as good.

I remember always wanting to play 7th guest but I never did. That takes me back. Now I'm all old and balding and stuff. Macaroni.

I remember 7th guess and the 11th hour!
Another cool one is the Dark Eye, a PC game with interesting graphics that puts you IN the story of various Poe tales, featuring the late William S Burroughs for one of the voices.

I replayed Call of Duty 2 Big Red One for the PS2 and I enjoyed it once again. Unlike Finest Hour which has so crazy difficult moments,( the fortress in the desert and the self-propelled gun protection mission,) Big Red one is still difficult in moments but the pattern to the madness is easier to get at, as well as heaving more save points within the missions. However, the move to controling the tanks from the outside was a bad one in my oppion, I was always running into buildings and getting stuck between rocks.. Even though many games have excellent driving controls somehow the idea for such a set-up has escaped the minds of Big Red 1's makers.

Ya! but not very hard to beat. Have you tried 'kill yourself in 5 minutes' iit's quite tough, I managed to get 98% once before time ran out. It's interesting to wonder around the halls and find all the wierd stuff they have sitting around.

So last night I played and replayed Call Of Duty 4 demo. It was a lot of fun! A whole lot better than I thought, I was thinking they were going more the Battleground 2 MMO shooter route, but luckily they stayed with the classic chaotic single player setup on COD 2 but set in a modern times. The graphics were a nice improvement as well, even though I can't run the game full till. I also tried the new Medal Of Honor and I agree with most reviewers that the whole upgradeable weapons idea is stupid cause it really reduces accuracy in the beggining of the game. The fact that you can't walk an aim down the muzzle at the same time is also kinda annoying. The game itself is fun but I might wait for the price to go down first.

It's a little older, but I was playing one of the Genji games - very pretty, good inuitive fighting controls... but the first boss fight blows monkey chunks. And the boss isn't even cool looking... he's a fugly little cheater...

I was realy excited when I heard that a new Soldier of Fortune game was comming out. It's not a very well know FPS series but it has it's dedicated fanbase. Plus the gameplay is still very good, even after 5 years. On top of that this was the only game that offered a system where enemies could be torn apart if they where shot with a shotgun close up, which is what the series was famous for, being one of the first game to offer an option to turn the gore off and white-wash gameplay. Towards the middle of November the newest addition to the series came out and I bought it the first day. Unfortunatly I knew somehting was wrong with the game the moment I got in the first level. In fact the menues might have given it away...apperantly Activision did not care for the franchise enough to give it a full development treatment because even the menues were bare-bones. I am not really sure what was wrong with the gameplay but somehow it had lost its' magic from the second game. In the press-release Activision was quoted as saying that they wanted to create a more realistic shooter, I guess that is why enemies sometimes just matterialised out of thin air and your chances of shooting anyone where really slim unless u aimed down the barrel. And even then it was hard because the enemies were great at hiding behind objects and being able to kill u with one shot. Becuase of this most weapons that where short range or did not have a high rate of fire where completely useless. Not to mention that most weapons sounded exactly the same. Not even the game environment design was original only two levels offered new settings that were not used the in the second game. However my biggest complains were that the game was incredably short, someone thought it a great idea to end each level with a boss fight with bosses who could absorb a boatload of rpg and machine gun fire (how is that realistic?) and lastly the designers of the game must have gone out to survey some fans and found that everyone really liked the ability to tear enemies apart, so naturaly that had to be part of the new game, except they went overboard and made the game feel like you were fighting ripe zombies or men made out of tender roast beef.

i recently had the opportunity to sample heavenly sword for the ps3.............. all i can say is WOW! great graphics, great fighting and controls. its much like god of war, sudeki, jade empire in that you have tons and tons of opponents and just one of you to fight off the onslaught. also we got to play a little of rock band on ps3. also tons of fun to be had and where it actually beats guitar hero is the fact that you get to have four people playing at once. i now can say that i actually want a ps3!! hahahaha
