To separate a thread from the cosplay thread over in AZ logistics, I'm setting up this thread to serve as Q & A for technical problems whether it's making a costume, fixing something around the house, whatever.
So here's my problem: On the sewing machine the top stitching comes out nicely but the bottom stitching is all loopy and loose. I glanced in a book and saw some things about tensions and my bobbin case has a screw to adjust the bobbin tension (who knew that was there for more than just holding the contraption together?? ) Sooo.. with what I described, is adjusting the bobbin tension the correct action or is that type of stitching indicative of an adjustment I need to make somewhere else?
I also saw in a diagram the silver knob on the top is a pressure knob. Pressure to what?
I had also asked about patterns but haven't heard anything, so I'm moving my question over here - what's a good way from someone with no familiarity whatsoever with patterns to get into them, with the ultimate objective of eventually making my own patterns? I have no idea where to start with that one.

i think i may be able to help with this thread my master. to answer your first question about the bottom thread being loose. mine does that sometimes too and it's really annoying but its just where the tension is getting too loose so the answer is yes but only turn in slighty and then test it out. if it's too tight loosen, if its too loose still tighten slighty more. its a hit and miss kinda thing.
a question for your question number two. i don't remember what kind of machine we got you so what kind of knob are you refering to? tell me the model number and the maker of your machine and i can probably clear this one up for you as well.
answer to question three. as i said before i don't have any patterns except for my notebook with diagrams and measurements for each piece of material for each costume. if you really wanted to then you could make a permanent template by going to the fabric store and getting some clear plastic that you would use to cover furniture and layout your diagram on that and cut it out, voila you have a permanent template. reading a premade pattern isn't that hard really, you lay out your patterns and decide what size you want to make your work and cut it out of the paper and then lay that on your fabric and cut it out. also on the back of each pattern you'll find that each size has guidelines for how much fabric your going to need. but i've never used one myself but i did have my mom teach me how to read one. i personally like to make my own patterns in my notebook.
i hope this has helped you but post up your machine type and model so i can find a picture and i'll help you.

Unh... a Brother....something or another. no model indicated on the machine. While looking for the model, I messed with the little knob, but it doesn't move, so I don't know what that's for. <shrug> Thanks much for the help!

if what your refering to is the knob to the far right of the top of the machine that is the indicator that tells you when your bobbin is full. so no that doesn't move at all unless you loosen the screw and reset it but i wouldn't adivise that.

Never figured that was what that was for... I always just looked at it and though "gee, the bobbin is full!". <shrug> Learn something new every day. What is a normal tension setting for everyday use? And do you really put a drop of oil in the mechanism before each project? Despite all the questions, I really am getting better though I still have a lot of problems of getting the bobbin thread to start stitching. Haven't gotten up to try to create my own stuff yet, though that's of course my goal. I've been doing just a lot of repairs and such. I hope to work myself up to Flying Snow's costume, but that's for another thread....

yes my love that little grey thing is to tell you that your bobbin is indeed full. As for the setting of the tension screw i'm not sure to it's postion as i've never had to change mine but as for the knob i keep it on 8 or 9. (very occasionally a 7) I like to keep it tight, this keeps me from having to go back and make alot of repairs. one thing you should do is cut a piece of fabric about 2 ft long and fold it over once or twice and keep it as a stich tester. do this and before you start a new stich, run that through your machine and make sure your thread is cooperating. if it's not take out your bobbin and make sure its rolling right, make sure your top thread isn't stuck in your tensioner and put it all back in and repeat the process untill you get your desired stiching. I'm still learning new thing myself and i'm going into my third year of self taught sewing.
