Triscut and I watched some anime recently: We watched Memories, a series of three short films connected by the common theme of memories. I still enjoyed all three shorts. My apriciation for the last short "cannon fodder" grew since last viewing. At first I was not hooked on the odd, anime-zombie look of the characters, now I thought it was an interesting departure. Plus the story is much deeper then the other two on the disc. We also watched Pom Poko from studio Ghibli. A story about the struggle of racoons to retain their hill from suburban development outside of Tokyo. It's an entertaining story with some good moments but have some odd aspects (if you watch it you will know exactly what I'm talking about) The theme is just as mature as other ghibli films and makes some entertaining explonations about tired people and why some have dark circles around their eyes.

On a related topic. I'm currently reading Nausicaa, Valley of the Wind series, done by Miyazaki. I heard about this book set sometime back, but only became really interested in it when I found out that Miyazaki actualy drew and wrote the entire thing. This has to be by far one of my favorite manga series, each book is action filled, well writen and the story is full on with very little to no filler. The books are the same price as a reg. manga book, yet pack about 3 times as much story. Unlike some of the other manga that became movies series, this is a completely different story, not just a paper copy with slight differences. I read that Miyazaki finished the books well after he finished the movie. I sorta wish that the movie was like the book, but that would be quite difficult, it would take several long movies, think LOR extended Trilogy to the Max, to tell the story right. It would make a great series, but only if Miyazaki directed it.

We finally rented Miyazaki's Spirited Away after not catching it all when Cartoon network was airing it, I have to say I was Very very Impressed ( all Hail Uncle Jager- who gives good Movie suggestions) and even the kids loved it. I really enjoyed the story and it really just pulled me in. I am really interested in seeing Howl's moving castle now. I had previously saw Kiki's Delievery service which was good but the animation was not as nice as Spirited Away. Lesson to be learned from this movie: When In a abandoned amusement parks or villages- Do not eat anything at the only resturant open unless you crave the life of a farm animal.

Me and the Spooky watched the first five episodes of Gilgamesh. The box was more interesting then de episodes, thought maybe it picks up. The voice acting was terrible, everyone was so even toned and calm. The animation style didn't appeal to me either, needless to say I had to force myself to watch by the end.

Kiki is perhaps the least interesting of the Miyazaki films.

My issue with Gilgamesh... I liked some of their ideas, but if you pull away the wings of this fly, you get a basic idea you've encountered so many times before....
Someone living in a teaching/leadership capacity, living on a big regal estate, rounding up a bunch of young kids with mutant powers to beat up some other kids with some mutant powers, with a couple of kids that love their powers and others that a torn between the responsibilities of possessing said powers, while the government tries to hide the existence of said kids with mutant powers, blah blah de blah blah.
At least the Xmen had Nightcrawler and Beast.

Has anyone seen the new Wallence and Grommit movie? I wanted to but have not gotten a chance yet. It won the Oscar over Howle's Moving Castle, which I admit was not Miyazaki's best film. A lot of the minor characters and many of the main character designes looked like they were taken from Spirited Away. By the way Howle comes out tommorow on DVD.

I finished watching Here and There, Now and Then, a 15 episode series. I was a little disappointed with the animation the cover style was so much cooler then the actual show (but that happens often). Overall this wasn't a bad show, but it wasn't a memorible experiance either. While the show may have had some really deep messages, they were lost in the irritation of a totaly moranic main character. I don't think anyone can be that pasifictic and child minded. There was little character growth, and most of the voice acting was too monotoned. And then there was Hondo, the bad guy, quite annoying, but came across successfuly creapy. I would say rent or skip it, maybe borrow it. Thought the whole box set goes for about 30 bucks so it's not a big loss.

I got to watch a little Adult Swim on Saturday cause the news was running late because of Nascar. It was very nice to see it again! I finaly saw an episode of FullMetal Alchemist. It wasn't bad, I think it was one of the earlier episodes. Having not seen it before or having notread anything about previous I was caught off guard by the suit of armor having a young child's voice. Makes me wish I could get cable again.

I watched 2 dvd's full of Neon Genesis last night. I never realised how complex it was going to get. I knew the basic story but I didn't expect the whole Adam under the Geo-Front and EVA 1 evolving thing. Has anyone seen the Platnum Directors cut of the series? I have the last 3 episodes. I'm interested to see how different the two versions are.

My best recommendation to you though is to not watch the ending. Youll be happier that way.

After watching some AMV's saved up on my computer I came to the firm conclusion that J-pop is horrrible maybe even worse than Western Pop. I can even see those fat basement shut-ins dancing to it holding their Sailor Moon battons. Ehhh need soap..need soap! Must clense Eyes!
