HIGH POINT - High Point University administrators will continue efforts to educate their students about the dangers of excessive drinking in the wake of the death of 20-year-old Terrence McCann.
The sophomore and Pennsylvania-native was pulled from a creek Tuesday morning more than two days after friends last saw him drinking beer at a local tavern.

While it's unclear to what extent drinking played a role in McCann's death, HPU Dean of Students W. Gart Evans said the incident underscored the importance of speaking to the dangers of alcohol abuse.
"We're looking at what we do, at what we can do and where we can go from here," Evans said Thursday.
Within the past year, the university staged a drunken driving simulator with the help of the N.C. State Highway Patrol and invited a speaker in his late 20's who became a paraplegic as a result of a drunken driving accident.
"We try to appeal to their reason, rather than just slapping them on the hand and saying 'no,'" Evans said.
This fall, the university will feature a new part-time staff member who will co-ordinate more health-education outreach activities at residence halls and other locations. Alcohol and substance abuse and sex education will be among the topics explored.
High Point police said Thursday they were still investigating the serving practices at Cleary's Hidden Pub, 2130 N. Main St., where friends say McCann was being served despite his age.
Police would not release details of the probe until it was complete, said Tony Staley, an Alcoholic Beverage Control detective with the High Point Police Department.
Cleary's had not been cited for serving to underage drinkers since the bar transferred to new ownership last May, according to Doyle Alley, a deputy administrator in the state ABC Commission.
Representative of Cleary's say they serve only those 21 and older and are careful to check identification.
Alley, who said he was receiving updates about the investigation through the Greensboro office of Alcohol Law Enforcement, said preliminary autopsy results suggested McCann drowned.
That information could not be confirmed with police, and relatives and representatives of the N.C. State Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill declined to comment.

This article comes from today's High Point Enterprise- why I have put this in here is that this "Dead guy" has thrown my neighborhood into chaos. The "dead Guy" as we loving ly now refer to him was found "floating" ( in less than a inch of water- no less) in the creek that flows behind my house about 6 houses down.I live in a quiet side street that is mostly retirees. The authorities first said they were not sure what happened to him- leaving some of us terrified there was a murderer in the neighborhood, now to find out he was a underage college student that was just too drunk to drive, or for that matter..Walk.. home. The high light of this entire media spill about this case was the "dead guy"'s apparently inbred roommate who preceeded to say on the evening news .... "well we were drunking and when you drink- you get drunk". And all I am thinking is all the thousands of dollars this dudes parents put out to send their prodgeny to school and this is all he could say.......please if you are going to send someone to a high priced university, please send someone that is at least smart enough to absorb some of the knowledge that is handed out in class...assuming that they accually go to class. Oh well- as they say- there goes the neighborhood..........
