To revive a dead thread and to kick it around some more, I have a serious question for those of you that are actually active here, and you new people that plan on sticking around.
How would you feel about this site going ad free? That would mean the site would have more storage space for me to work with, a domain, and a handful of subdomains. Some file sharing between sites would also be allowed. This would be a cost coming from my own pocket, though donations, would be gratefully accepted and appreciated. I seriously consider this since this site is something I enjoy working on and is something very important to me - I guess you could say it's a hobby for me, though it feels like something bigger. A hobby with meaning to others (at least, that's what I tell myself). I waver a bit though - are we ready for that plunge? Would anyone ever be willing to help out? Of course everyone prefers something that doesn't cost them anything - in light of that, would you prefer I simply trim the site down in size and breadth? If so, where would the cuts fall?
Lastly, I haven't looked around a whole lot, but it seems that my host's costs are average. If you know a good place to check out, please inform me. I'd like to comparison shop, even though I am comfortable here.
Please PLEASE Please consider this post carefully, and answer carefully. Your thoughts are important to me, especially in a decision this big for the Hall and myself. This is not a move I am willing to consider without a certain degree of devotion and a small degree of support from you, my family. Thanks for reading this.

I'm really glad this topic is so important to you guys. I'll respond before someone gets hurt! I think the site should go ad-free. I would gladly donate $$$ to help out. I would also donate my coding abilities if you need them. I've coded a guestbook before, and I've had experience setting up phpBB if you are thinking of setting up a new forum.

Thou shalt not question thy overlord Spook's intentions, heathen.
<pause>
I can't picture Spook driving an SUV. Actually, I can't picture Spook driving anything. Except maybe a camel. I wish I had a camel.

Hmmm... maybe I should get mad about stuff more often - it seems to get things in motion Your responses, Atari and PAIN, are certainly appreciated and more positive than expected. Your expertise, Atari, is definitely appreciated. Do you think that we are yet too small of a community to move on to new digs? How big is a justifiable size? I prefer llamas.

I haven't done much comparison shopping, but I did check out the services I use already to see how much it would be to just uprade with them. To go ad-free with ProBoards, it's $7/mo, with the option of getting more bandwidth should I need it (if I ever have traffic that would need it) on a monthly basis. It's basically spending $7 to get a credit, with the option of getting extra credits if I need them. If I go over the amount allotted by my credit, there is no problem - the board simply has ads again. This is not a big deal to me now as the ads are contained and mostly discreet, and occasionally funny. It's still something to keep in mind, and seeing as I would be able to choose when a credit is applied I could honestly say, for example, "This month is brought to you by PAININTHEASS!" For the site itself, I current get... 20 or 25MB. Something like that. I'm currently very close to that level now, and I still have distant projects in my head for the Hall and the direction I want to take it. For $9, I can double my space, ditch the ads and popups, get my own domain, a couple of POP accounts, and other benefits. For $12, I get those benefits and 100MB. I could do a lot with space like that, especially since I strive to keep my files and pages as slim and light as possible. If you want to see the plans I am looking at, go to www.angelfire.com and follow the links, they have a decent enough little chart-at-a-glance overview to see what's entailed at each level. This is still all in a very "what if" stage, but the space allotment tells me that it won't be too long before the Hall outgrows itself. I would rather expand, and the $20 a month or so wouldn't be the problem - I don't mind spending for something as important as our community. My question is whether it is justifiable and whether I am capable of doing this at this juncture (very likely). "A little help from my friends" certainly will never hurt. Rest assured, there's no SUVs in the forcast. I doubt it would ever happen, but should more than one person want to help in a given month, whatever funding not used immediately would be set aside and applied to the next month. This leads me to another question (like I expect you guys to address ALL my questions between this post and the last ... but then, you did just surprise me by taking me seriously ) Of course, everyone would be happy to have an ad-free little haven that can offer bigger and better stuff. But... if you so happen to choose to contribute towards the site, what should be in it for you? Certainly, there would be a special designation for donors, and all the appropriate thanks, but what should you get out of it? I'd like to think that knowledge of helping to keep a better community running should be reward enough, but I know realistically speaking, there has to be some sort of incentive to donate. So there's my thinking on the issue for the night. Thoughts? Questions? Empirical data to offer?

Just send an asian prostitute my way.... <pause> Seriously, just an acknowledgment that I am in fact God.... <pause> <remove God's lightening from my ass> I don't think incentives are necessary, I just like the site.

Incentives? Hmmmm..perhaps an addition of some certain artwork to the site would probably make the inevitabilitie of death more acceptable. "To quote Andy Rooney"-Didja ever notice?? Old people seem to have a habit of repeating themselves and to be terribly irritable and cranky.
