I have beggan watching The Legend of Black Heaven, about a corporate drone who used to be a big rockstar in his youth. Apperantly his guitare shredding is needed by some foxy alien nation to fight a war. I'm not sure if I like the series yet or not but the first two episodes where interesting enough The animation reminds me a little of Azumanga Daioh, and the main character is voiced by the same guy who did Jet in Bebop. More to come later.

Karas The Prophecy Co directed by the guy who brought us Big O this is a 3D/ Toonshader style movie, which I think is going to be part of a set. A cross in style between the new Appleseed and Blood the Last Vampire it is about a creature who battles demons from another dimention who are on earth as giant mechanical beasts. Sound pretty 'seen it before' but the level of animation makes it something worth seeing. As I mentioned before I think the storyline will be further developed in sequals, because right now it's left somewhat unfinished. The 3d is really stylised but not so distracting and wierd as in Appleseed or Scanner Darkly, there where some pretty impresive scenes my favorite is the water scene in the hospital there is a pan shot that is worthy of major league live action. Definatly something worth keeping an eye open for.
Upon further study there is a sequal called Revelations not yet realeased in the US.

I finished watching Samurai Champloo today. Of course I'm sad to see the characters go, but I'm glad none were killed, I was dreading another Cowboy Bebop ending. Next week I will finaly get to watch that anime about the robotic hospital bed again. I'm excited, I remember I liked that movie even before I really got into anime. That is my reports for now, I'm watching mostly stand alone anime films as part of my netflix que after that I will try to cover Trigun and GTO part2. There is still so much stuff to watch on my list. Maybe after getting a new computer I will up my per/order limit so I can knock down some more titles. Right now I'm limited by the fact that my computer at home is old and faulty so I can only save things I like while at work.

Roujin Z A little story about what happens when you combine millitary technology with Medical care for the elderly, or A.C.H.E.S From the same guy as Akira, a continuation with his obsession with assimalation. A funny, story with some great lines, and a bonus really fat cat.

Tokyo Godfathers A heart warming tale about three hobos and a x-mas gift. This movie has one of the most twisting, interconecting plots I have seen in a long time. There is a little of everything in here, some good humor, some drama and some rather dark moments, with a good mix of naturalistic and exagerated animation. There are even some references to famous films if you care to look very carefully. A good film to watch in group.

Gundress A lame formulaic anime from the creator of Ghost In The Shell. This movie demonstrates that even great animation directors can make crap. A Bubblegum Crisis rip off with 5 ladies who pilot mechs for a private headhunter/crime fighting organisation, who end up taking down the corrupt military. And as you guest it there was struggling and drama and a miraculous victory against all odds.

I just watched Hellsing Ultimate Series Vol1. And was I impressed!! More voilence, dark humor, it seems to be overal much darker, and atleast for vol.1 comes in a 55 minute chunk. There is also a most awsome end credit, very gradious and gothic! A must watch for any fan of Hellsing

I recorded Karas the Prophecy a week ago and have yet to watch it- although the kids saw it and thought it was great. Blood the Last Vampire was good- however the Series Blood+ Surpasses the movie definately.

The blood was a improvement from the first series Vampires turning to dust. This Ultimate series follows the Manga almost exactly which is always good. I can't wait till the next Volume comes out.

GTO Aka Great Teacher Onizuka Probably one of the best anime's about teaching and school. I had heard alot about this series before I watched it, it was on almost every anime recommendation list around. I have to say it did not dissapoint. The first disc was especialy good, in fact the entire first box set was great! GTO Is quite a long series scoring around the 44 episode mark, yes nothing compared to Gundam. The basic premise revolves around Onizuka, an ex-biker punk who wants to become a teacher because he is horney and wants to score with the girls he is going to teach. Of course as the series goes on he learns what teaching is truely about. As you would guess there is plenty of panty and cleavage shots, as well as many of those famous anime over-acted reaction shots when people turn to putty and scream. Onizuka also provided the matterial and talent for the "Little Torrtia Boy" movie trailer. GTO also features one of my favorite intros (the original), see it here www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMfhSrI0FDEMost of the adventures revolve around Onizuka trying to win the love of his class and become Great Teacher Onizuka, however, as the series gets into the 20 or so episode mark the storylines get a little over the top, with shorts involving Yakuza, economic sabotage..etc. Luckily the series regains its focus and returns to adventures about the teens in his class. A strong subplot of the series is also about the struggle of the japanese during a depression in the early 90's. Many stories envolve people short of money during this depression. There are many other much more suttle but no less serious undertones to the series that are cleverly hidden in the stories. I was not happy with the ending of the series, but since I don't want to ruin the ending for those who have not seen it I will not say why. To me this series was a vision of a fairytale high school life that I never had. One I only realised I had missed, long after getting out of high school.

Barefoot Gen Done in 'old scholl animation', think Astro Boy, Speed Racer style, Gen is the story of a family around the time of the Hiroshima bombing. Dealing with the same subject matter as Grave of the Fireflies, Gen is much more upbeat film. Maybe upbeat is not the word, positive, if you will. While most of the film features the cute-ish rounded face, and giant eyes style of the above mentioned series, during the bombing scene much of it is done in hard-edged realistic drawings. Much of the horrors of the bombing follows this same style, while Gen and his family continue to be drawn rounded, creating strong seperation between childhood and reality. There is also a sequal to the original film, done 3 years later on the same disc. It seems to continue the story of Gen and his family. While the basic character designes stay the same, the art style for the film changes. Everyone is now more realistic with a more human shapes replacing the previous films round ball shaped heads. The mother also seems to age about 20 years between the two films, going from a smooth pale complection to one that is much more weathered and wrinkled. I have not watched all of this film so I cannpt tell if it stays true to the standards set by the original.

Mezzo Directed by Yasuomi Umetsum, who also directed Kite and more importantly the far superior Mezzo Forte. Much Like Kite, Mezzo Forte was violent, filled with filth and barely legal. Mezzo, however, was like that Wal Mart "edited for Content" version of the Forte. Based around that same characters, Mezzo took most of the hyper-violence out of Forte and replaced it with childish dialogue, insane story lines about ghosts, aliens, and a police cheif with kat whiskers who hires a wierd barber to hire an assassin to kill the DSA crew. Very little true humor was left in the show, and there were such overused side stories as the dead child burried in the wall haunting a house. Nothing was really explained, and there seemed to be no real thought given to anything. The animation was still nice, but that is about it. Definate AVOID!

Death Note: I started downloading this anime just basicly because I have heard a lot of people say it is good. It is good- It is a story were a "Death God" is bored so he drops on note book on earth were if you write a persons name in the book and imagine their face- they will die in 40 seconds, of a heart attack if you don't write a cause of death down. The book is used on humans andonly a human can use it- at the price of losing the ablity of entering heaven or hell when they die. Light, a police inspectors son and a student finds the book and experiements with using publized criminals names. So Light begins killing off inmates and crimals in mass numbers and the police hire a guy named L to find out who the murderer is and how they are killing people from afar.
It is a interesting series- I would not say one I would be fanantical about as some but it is done in a lot of the ways Blood + is.

Thanks for posting about Deathnote. I've been wondering for a while what it was about, and you gave a good summary of it. I've seen some good costumes from it, but also an assload of closet cosplays from it.

Legend of Black Heaven Gabe the guitarist of small time hard rock band returns from the abyss of being an office drone when he is required by a race of aliens to power their 'ultimate weapon'. As the battle goes on the enemy grows stronger and the band reforms to help Gabe fight. On the way Gabe experiances highs and lows as he tries to re-live his former life, but realises the aliens don't care anything for his music. And that is pretty much the entire series. After the opening episodes the series takes a dive and remains there to the end. Lost is the initial humor, the wild animation style, which would be all ok if the story was doing something interesting. I really wanted to like this series cause I like the idea of 'hard rock saves the universe' but there is just nothing to take a hold of you.
