And Jager said: I noticed watching AMVs that there is a general belief that Naruto is a bad-ass show. And if you are trying to do a bad-ass/edgy/cool action video all you have to do is grab a pop dare I say "nu" metal song and put in some naruto. Having never seen the show I will not totaly deny its bad-assness, but what I saw in the videos doesn't really put the fighting action above DBZ.

And Also: Ola Chicos and Chicas ! One question far all, any good suggestions for the name of our picture site? Also, I was recently watching the first episode of FLCL or FullyCully, or something like that. Anywho, that is one of the most bazzara shows I've seen in a while. Very nice anime/art work as well as good old doodles. I have no idea what the show is about yet but I'm interested to find out. I also have to recommend Gantz although I missed to key episodes out of the first six. But It looks like an interesting show/story telling angle. Though the main characters nagging does get annoying after a while, I will see if his voice is any better in Japanese. I remember seeing small snippets of FLCL when it first came on Adult Swim, but I never watched an entire episode. I was mad because they replaced either InuYasha or Bebop with it when I had not seen all of those episodes yet.

And then... Heh heh- Fooly Cooly- nothing but robots and sexual refferences. Sad thing is it is only 6 episodes long. I joined the cosplay.com site too but only have access to the forums. I don't have too many costumes to show off yet. Spook we are still working on the repair of that sewing machine- don't give up hope on us yet. I have learned that Paranoia Agent is not as bad as I orginally thought it too be, I really enjoyed the show about the schizo lady- fighting to keep a normal life between 2 other alter personalities. It proves that teenagers with skates and bats are not always bad things :)Well for those of you seeking a beach weekend- please let us know- we were going to visit this weekend and decided that we would like some adult company as well as the tykes that we carry with us- we were thinking of just taking off one weekend this summer. any ideas anyone?Space is limited- so let us know

I was thinking I would start reviewing Anime that I rent from Blockbuster over the summer, since I work there now so it's free. I always figure this is a good way of finding out about titles that look interesting but you don't know much about. Plus Spook got me on this whole reviewing thing after doing the beers, which I will continue to do once I can afford a good beer again. About the taking off for the beach thing. I am in. School starts Sept. 14th and I get out of here aroung Aug. 14th but I have to stop by Greenville for a week before going back to savannah.

My first review will be Howl's Moving Castle by Hayao Miyazaki, which I saw last Sunday. There is a great article about it at www.animefringe.com/magazine/2005/06/feature/01.php but it also has some plot spoilers in it, so I would recommend only reading it after seeing the movie. I love all of Miyazaki's films so I have been eagerly awaiting the release of Howl since last year. I was definatly not disappointed by the film, although it is not one of my favorites of his. Much like most of his films this one also had alot of deep, more adult messages, perhapse even more then some of his previous films. It also had the typical Miyazaki character drawings in it, which has a little distracting because I felt like sometimes I was watching Spirited Away with different colored hair. I also want to give props to the sound design. This was the first Miyazaki film I recall having true suround sound, which was put to good use in the opening scene and some of the flight scenes. It really help heighten the experiance! Overall, of course I truely enjoyed myself, and am going to go find the book the movie was based on and give it a read. So I say, see the film (if you can), buy it (just don't steal it, the man deserves our money.) On a connected note, I was amazed at the number of people that showed up for the screaning at 1:45 on a Sunday. When i saw Spirited Away also on Matinee there was a total of 3 people in the theater including me. This time there was close to 30. I was interested to see that a large group where young Asian families bringing children. I guess introducing them to Miyazaki's world.

I also watched Biohunter by Yuzo Sato, who was supposed to be involved with Ninja Scroll and Ghost in the Shell. Unlike those two movies this one was quite boring. The story revolves around hunting of demons, I won't say more not to give the plot away. The film made in 1995 felt quite dated, and seemed to reuse some of the elements of Vampire Hunter D (his hand/face reappeared here) and Demon City/Wicked City. The old man from Ninja Scrolls even made a return with longer hair and a meatier body. The plot was quite pointless and never really went anywhere, making it hard to get into, and the gore/action was also very dated. the film would have been saved by a more developed story but that did not happen. I say rent this one first if, you like the mid-90's demon anime stuff.

IRIA Zeiram the Animation.... an older anime set in the future with some twists that don't seem too futuristic at all. A pair of sibling bounty hunters head off on a mission they don't know much about, which goes badly and the brother's fate is unkown. His younger sister not only seeks what happened to her brother, but also must deal with the entity Zeiram which has an apparent beef with her. The plot sounds kind of stale, but it's actually well done - I thought the dialogue was pretty decent and the plot pacing moved along easily enough. The animation seems a bit dated, but once you get into the story, you don't really notice. It's a nice short series - 3 vhs (haven't seen a dvd of this one around) so you get enough to care but not so much that you stop caring. I'd give more details about it but I want to watch it again first and also my brain is currently half mush.

Anywho, they do have all of the episodes on one dvd, and it's not very expensive either. I liked the series when I saw it, especialy the design of the buildings and the evil one was unique, atleast at that time. The buildings have a mushroom like thing going for them and the tanks and some other objects borrow heavily form Ottoman/Turk design, mainly the rounded dome that they have on their buildings. By no means was this a must have series but on a bargain it is quit enoyable and something I would not mind having.

Anime Cries Uncle! Vol.1
Yes, you cannot escape, another post of anime reviews! Unless of course you just skip over this post. Anywho, let us begin. Darkside Blues directed by Yoshimichi Furukawa. I am split about this one. I liked the story but the ending was a little weird, basically it just ended when I thought the story should have gone on. The film took its art direction from the same person who did Vampire Hunter D bloodlust. The styles of the ornamentation on buildings and rooms was the same lacey design found in D. I originally thought this was going to be another one of those monster animes that are always based in Shinjuku, but I soon found out it wasn’t. This one is much more about emotions and psychology then the rebellion that is the basis for the plot. I found the film a little hard to understand, but that’s because I was expecting an action/demon anime, so I only halfway listened to the dialogue. However, even with this miscommunication on my part I found that the story kept my attention and I wanted to find out what was going to happen, not like Biohunters where I lost interest because I knew exactly what was going to happen. The story was going all well, till the end, where it seemed like it just suddenly screeched to a halt and that was it. Many things that I thought should have been tied up were left open. This was the opinion of most reviewers, that the creators where struggling to cram the story into the timeframe and left out too much. I don’t know anything about the original story but what was left made a good enough story, and maybe after rewatching it I would be happier with the ending. This is not a film I would buy for regular price, but If I saw it at a good deal I would defiantly ad it to my collection, it seems like one of those films that give you something new each time you watch it. Also I really liked the soundtrack, especially the Louisiana blues like title track. If that is a Japanese person singing, he does an excellent job. The one last grippe I have about the film is that the main character is actually called Darkside, in both English and Japanese, which just bugged me cause it seemed like such an ear sore in the dialogue. I also watched Md Geist I&II by Koichi Ohata (who also did Blue Gender). To open I must say: What the Fuck?! MD Geist I the directors cut: made in 1996 and looked like it was made in the mid 80’s especially the character design early on, reminded me of GI Joe, or He-Man. This movie was the more fluid out of the two, most likely because it was the director’s cut. However, I have a hard time remembering such a weak plot before, the whole film lasted a little over 40 minutes with such great places as the Brain Palace and evils such as Death Force, not to mention cheesy Japanese glam-rock. Any who I think the same plot would have benefited from being twice as long. I have to say that I liked the armor design of the characters and the robots, sorta organic, mechanical, pointy animal with giant phallic cannons in the crutch regions. Very much like some of the stuff in Blue Gender. The main characters armor design had a slight touch of Amano to it. That was about the only good part of these films. The plot also forgot to explain why Geist decides to turn on the Death Force and doom the human race. MD Geist II, made almost no sense, it felt like the original negative had been destroyed and what was left was patched together to make a story. There seems to be not only jumps in location but also time that makes no sense. Once again this one was also roughly 45 minutes long and would have benefited from being twice that length. If not for all the senseless jumps in plot this one would have made a much better story then the first film. The most annoying jumps where two that had the biggest impact on the plot, the cyborg turning to the side of Geist and the end of the battle with Krauser. This battle seemed to show that Krauser had beaten Geist then there was un unexplained explosion and Krauser was dead, and so was the human race. Now why Geist made to fight to protect the humans on this planet from another army of humans in a previous war decides to kill off all the humans is lost on me. Definitely a don’t bother with it title.

I also watched Akira again, after about ten years. It was much better then I remember it. Unlike MD Geist which looked very aged, Akira still looks very modern, although I have to admit the version I saw was the restored, HD print, but still the design is still good. The only real problem I still have with it is that Kaneda and Kei look so alike, when they where dressed alike it was sometimes hard to tell who was who. On another note I almost finished watching FLCL, and I’m loving it. I still have little idea about what is going on but it’s funny as hell. Great references to other anime as well. I found ones for Helsing and Lupin quite comic. It’s a big shame there is only six episodes of it.
