Talking of Dutch beers the other day I tried Tilburg Durtch Brown Ale wihich ofcourse is made in Tilburg by a brewer which makes mostly Trappist style beers. I was interested about this beer cause its lable which is overal mustard yellow but features a part of Bosch's painting The Garden of Earthly Delights. It's some sort of humanoid bird with a black kettle on its head and what apears to be 2 sets of legs sitting in a horseshoe shaped chair eating another human who has two crows flying out its butt. Now this might be a joke on the part of the brewer about their product but either way the beer was pretty damn good. I would recomend this to fans of New Castle and fans of mid-heavy beers. It's semi-dry with some sweetness and a hint of fruit/raisons with a mild organic barley/wheet finish. The beer leaves a pleasant sourness in your mouth after you are finished drinking it.
Second up, Shock Top Belgian Wit an attempt by Anheiser-Busch to make a micro-brew wheat beer, which according to its lable has one awards. While the beer has a good mix of sweetness assosiated with wheat beers and a suprisingly strong aftertaste of wheat, I would not call it Belgian style. Belgian wheets , such as Hooegarten, Omegang, even Blue Moon have a distinct spicy citrusy flavor that is the signature of Belgian style wit (white beers) . I have to say that our beers did go wonderfully with our bbq pulled pork sandwitches, nicely complementing the smokey meat and the sweetness of the sauce.

Okocim Palone Brewed in Poland, the lable discribes this as a 'fire-brewed dark beer' Eastern-europe has a tradition of making many fine dark beers especialy areas that have alot of german ancestry like Bohemia. Okocim tastes generaly like most black beers, crisp and has a sweetness that is not very noticable but after drinking it you do note that your mouth is generaly sweet. I could see drinking this beer one evening after a days work in the warm outdoors. I has a good refreshing bubblyness but not overly carbonated like many lighter beers tend to be. If you enjoy Modeo Negra you would like this beer.

Palmetto Porter & Amber These are ofcourse two seperate beers. As the name might tell you they are brewed in South Carolina, somewhere neer Charleston. I got both while we were down there for the wedding. The Amber is of the lightly sweet variety but luckily not of the overly sweet, maple type. Overall quite unremarkable , with nothing new to offer. It's good on a hot muggy day, which is probably a constant in Charleston. The Porter is also not really revolutionary but on par with the likes of other US micro-brews like Anchor's Porter. It is of the dry, coffee and dark unsweetened chocolate style which is best at tempretures just above fridge temp. So I usually let mine sit out for 5-10 minutes that way you can taste all the various ingreediants.

Mendocino's Black Eye Ale, brewed in California. Black Eye is a black and tan combining Mendocino's own Black Hawk Stout and Eye of The Hawk Ale. A nice and creamy brew, one of the best I have had in a while. Combines the creamyness of the stout nicely with the lightness of an ale.

Tried something new last night called a "Scooby Snack"
Scooby Snack
1/2 oz Malibu® coconut rum 1/2 oz creme de bananes 1/2 oz Midori® melon liqueur 1/2 oz pineapple juice 1 1/2 oz whipped cream
Pour rum, creme de banane, melon liqueur and pineapple juice into a stainless steel shaker over ice. Add whipped cream, and shake; until well mixed and sufficiently chilled. Strain into an old-fashioned glass and shoot.
Serve in: Old-Fashioned Glass
Pretty much same thing we made except ours excluded the creme de banana and whipped cream. Pretty good stuff!

It really wasn't that sweet- I found the recipie posted here from the net- but we got the idea of watching some food network show where a resturant ( crazy place- served a total seafood pizza with pesto sauce on it instead of tomatoes) made them- but instead of whipped cream it used a splash of half and half and did not have banana liquor in it. I thought it could be a little sweeter but it was good- and really strong too.

Swearing off Alcohol for a while..... I've lived up to my "Never drink again" promise for almost a year. It usually only lasts a week. I checked out Jager's blog and I might have to break that promise to my liver.

The promise didn't last forever- I have inbibed since but not as hard of partier as I used to be. I have learned the Joys of Jack Daniels! Still not quite sold on Makers Mark yet.
